Biotep: Pioneering Bioprocessing for a Sustainable Future
Biotep, operated by Nofima — a member of Biotech North—is a flexible mini-factory in Tromsø, Norway, offering high-tech companies the opportunity to test and optimize extraction processes for marine and plant-based biomass.

Biotep: Pioneering Bioprocessing for a Sustainable Future

Biotep, located in Tromsø, Norway, is a state-of-the-art bioprocessing facility that connects laboratory research with commercial production. We help companies optimize and scale up processes, and produce valuable components such as omega-3 fatty acids, proteins,  antioxidants and other bioactive compounds from marine and plant-based raw materials. These components are used in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. By partnering with Biotep, companies gain access to our network of researchers, experts, and advanced facilities.

At Biotep, we understand the challenges that companies face when transitioning from laboratory results to full-scale production. Our flexible facility allows businesses to test and refine their processes without the need for significant upfront investments. This unique capability makes Biotep an ideal partner for both startups and established companies looking to innovate and expand their product lines. After optimizing and scaling up their processes, companies can produce at Biotep by renting our facility as needed, avoiding the significant costs of building their own factory during the market establishment phase. This flexible approach allows businesses to focus on growth and innovation without the burden of large capital expenditures.

Partnerships and Collaboration
Biotep is a proud member of Biotech North. This gives us access to experts and companies in demand of the services we offer. It boosts our visibility and credibility, allowing us to share resources and knowledge. This helps speed up the development and commercialization of new technologies.

We believe that collaboration is key to driving innovation. By partnering with Biotep, companies gain access to an extensive network of researchers, industry experts, and state-of-the-art facilities. Together, we can overcome challenges in bioprocessing and develop solutions that benefit both businesses and the environment.

“We have the opportunity to produce larger volumes, while we´re also testing new technologies and production methods on a larger scale. (…) The fact that Biotep, in addition, has a food approval from the Norwegian Food Safety Authorities is a big advantage for Aker Biomarine, who operates in an international market. This meant that we could develop customers in different markets while our own factory was being built.”

Øyvind Våge, CEO Understory, Aker Biomarine

“In cooperation with Biotep process engineers, we have been able to make important measures and improvements in our production, which has resulted in a multiplication of our production capacity per week, which has further made us a lot more cost efficient in our production.”

Andreas Semmingsen, CEO, Marealis AS
