Filamentous fungi produce a wide array of secondary metabolites, small molecules that often have bioactive properties. Secondary metabolites from filamentous fungi have saved millions of human lives, since Alexander Fleming’s discovery in 1929 that several Penicillium species can produce the antibiotic penicillin. Members of the Penicillium genus have since then been continuously used for commercial production of several medicines, such as the cholesterol-lowering compactin and the antifungal griseofulvin.
